Shaft friction — where it appears

The load a pile transfers to the ground along its sides rather than through its toe. It is taken as a fraction of the vertical effective stress and therefore grows with depth, and its sense is decided by which of the pile and the soil is settling faster — so it reverses at the depth where they change places.
