Concept

Neutral plane — where it appears

The depth along a pile at which the relative movement between shaft and soil reverses, so that the friction changes from downward drag to upward resistance. The pile's largest axial force is there, and its position is found from vertical equilibrium of the whole pile rather than assumed.
