Weld shrinkage — where it appears

The contraction a weld would undergo on cooling if it were free, and the force that results when it is not. The metal yields in tension while hot and stays that way when cold, so what is left is a locked-in force at about the yield stress, applied along the weld and at the weld's own position on the section.
