Modal combination — where it appears

The rule that turns the separate peak responses of a structure's modes into one design value, because the peaks do not occur at the same instant. The square root of the sum of squares assumes the modes are independent; the complete quadratic combination adds a cross term whose sign is the sign of the two contributions.
