Concept

Angle of repose — where it appears

The steepest slope a granular material stands at unsupported, equal to its angle of internal friction for a dry cohesionless soil. It is what a stockpile forms itself into and what a silo's stored contents rest against, so it sets both the shape of a heaped load and the pressure a retaining structure has to resist.
