Weld throat — where it appears

The effective depth of a weld measured from its root, on which the weld's area and stresses are computed. For a fillet weld it is the height of the triangle inscribed in its cross-section, at forty-five degrees to the legs; for a partial-penetration butt weld it is the depth actually fused.
