Stub column — where it appears

A compression member short enough that its buckling length has almost no influence on its capacity, so it fails at very nearly the squash load of its area. Bearing stiffeners, base plates and test specimens for residual stress are all checked as one, and the point of the idealisation is that it isolates the section's own strength from anything about its length.
