Concept

Static moment — where it appears

The total bending moment a span must carry, equal to the free bending moment of that span and fixed by the load and the span alone. Stiffness decides how it divides between the middle and the ends and cannot change the total, which is why moment redistribution is legitimate and why continuity buys a distribution rather than a capacity.
