Concept

Impedance — where it appears

The product of density and wave velocity in a medium, whose ratio across an interface decides how much wave energy is reflected and how much passes through. It is what limits the amplification a soil layer can produce, because the energy that reaches the bedrock can leave downward rather than reflecting again.
