Transition temperature — where it appears

The temperature at which a ferritic steel changes from ductile tearing to brittle cleavage, and therefore the axis along which its toughness has to be quoted. It shifts upward with plate thickness and with strain rate, so the same steel is more brittle as a thick section and under a fast load.
