Flaw — where it appears

A crack, notch, weld defect or inclusion at which a stress concentration and a fracture can start, and the quantity a toughness is actually spent on. Its critical size goes as the square of the toughness over the stress, so anything halving the toughness quarters the defect a member will tolerate.
