Concept

Damage tolerance — where it appears

A design philosophy that assumes a structure will crack and asks instead whether the crack will be found in time. The inspection interval comes from how long a crack takes to grow from the smallest size anybody can detect to the largest the section can carry, so the quantity it needs is a growth curve rather than a fatigue life.
